Strip away the loyalty and the actual decision comes down to a handful of engineering realities: can the pump move your material, at your hose length, through your tip, all day without starving? Here is how to think it through.
Roof coatings go down with airless sprayers. An airless pump pressurizes the coating itself and forces it through a small carbide orifice, the tip, which atomizes the material into a fan. No compressed air mixes with the coating. The two numbers that define any airless rig are maximum pressure and maximum flow rate, usually stated in gallons per minute. For heavy-bodied roof coatings, flow rate and the pump’s ability to sustain pressure under load matter far more than the peak pressure number on the brochure.
High-solids silicones and mastics are viscous, and viscosity is what kills undersized equipment. A pump that handles house paint effortlessly will cavitate, surge, and die young trying to push heavy silicone through a long hose. When sizing a rig for high-solids work, look at:
