The Safety Gear Every Coating Crew Needs

Roof coating work looks less dangerous than tear-off, and that perception is exactly the problem. No torches, no demolition, but the crew is still working at height, on surfaces that get slick, around pressurized equipment and chemical products. A serious coating operation treats safety gear as part of the job spec, not an afterthought. Here is the practical rundown.

Fall Protection Comes First

Falls are the dominant killer in roofing, and coating crews are not exempt. Every job starts with a fall protection plan appropriate to the roof:

  • Personal fall arrest: full-body harness, lanyard or self-retracting lifeline, and a rated anchor point, inspected before every use. Webbing with cuts, chemical damage, or a deployed load indicator gets retired, not debated.
  • Warning lines and monitors: on large low-slope roofs, designated boundaries and a safety monitor keep the crew out of the leading-edge zone where arrest systems are not in use.
  • Guarding openings: skylights and roof hatches deserve special paranoia. Skylights fail under body weight, and a coating crew moving backward while spraying is exactly who finds one. Screens, covers, or guardrails around every opening, every time.

OSHA sets specific requirements for fall protection in this work; the point here is not to recite them but to insist that someone on the crew genuinely knows them and builds the plan before anyone climbs a ladder.

The Silicone Slip Hazard Deserves Its Own Paragraph

Wet silicone is among the slickest surfaces a worker will ever stand near, and even cured silicone is treacherous with morning dew on it. This is a hazard unique enough to coating work that it changes daily practice: plan spray sequences so no one is walking freshly coated areas, work toward the access point rather than away from it, mark coated sections clearly, and broadcast granules into walkway paths. Footwear matters too; soft, high-traction soles are worth specifying for the crew. Treat every coated surface as slippery until proven otherwise.

Respiratory Protection

Spraying atomizes coating into mist, and nobody should be breathing it. What is appropriate depends on the product and conditions, which is why the safety data sheet for each coating is the starting document, not the label on the pail. In general terms, spray application calls for respiratory protection matched to the material, and solvent-based products raise the bar compared with water-based ones. Anything beyond casual use means a real respiratory protection program: fit testing, training, and cartridge change-out schedules. Beards and tight-fitting respirators do not mix, and pretending otherwise protects no one.

Eyes, Skin, and Everything Else

  • Eye protection: safety glasses at minimum; goggles when spraying overhead or handling solvents.
  • Gloves: chemical-resistant gloves suited to the coating and cleanup solvents in use.
  • Sun and heat: a white reflective roof bounces sunlight up at the crew. Sunscreen, shade breaks, water, and a heat illness plan are safety equipment in every practical sense.
  • High-pressure awareness: airless equipment operates at pressures capable of injecting coating through skin. An injection injury looks minor and is a surgical emergency. Guns get tip guards, pressure gets relieved before service, and every crew member knows an injection means the hospital, immediately.

Culture Is the Real Equipment

Gear on a truck protects no one. The crews that stay safe are the ones where the foreman walks the roof before work, the fall plan is stated out loud, harnesses actually get clipped, and anyone can stop the job when something looks wrong. For contractors, that culture is also a sales asset: building owners and general contractors increasingly check safety practices before awarding work. The gear list above is the entry fee.
